The other day an old friend invited me to be virtual friends through Facebook, and since it didn't send me her email address (and the address I had on file didn't seem to be working anymore) I decided to sign up to reply to her message. After going through the sign-up process and entering my high school and college and uploading my address book, Facebook determined people that I knew who already had Facebook accounts and sent them notices that I had just signed up. Throughout the next few days, people added me as friends and it was interesting to see those who had accounts: my sister, sister-in-law, some friends from the area, old friends from high school or college. And then I found out I was befriended by...my mother-in-law?
In high school I thought I might be an illustrator or cartoonist for a living. I did a few cartoons for the high school paper and actually carried on in college, doing regular cartoons for 3 out of 4 years. So the other day a link that came up in my RSS feeds caught my eye: an editorial cartoon contest. I haven't drawn a cartoon for years...but perhaps it's time to dust off the old idea machine and work something up. It helps that the contest has some pretty specific direction (Click for more details).
As Janel and I begin to keep our eyes out for a replacement vehicle for our car, we've been focusing on diesels. A friend of ours has been part of a biodiesel co-op near us, which sells B100 and we'd like to take advantage of that, too. (I've also considered the possibility of doing some homebrew biodiesel from old restaurant vegetable oil...but perhaps I should wait and see how my first batch of homebrew beer works out in the next month before thinking about brewing fuel). All to say I just found some interesting news: Tyson Foods is going to be selling animal fat to ConocoPhillips, who will turn it into biodiesel.
This past winter some friends and I got together one evening to discuss Socially Responsible Investing and since two of them had done a lot of preparation work on the materials, I asked if they would let me post it here. I know a number of people who are interested in SRI but don't know where to begin, so I thought that since the information was already all compiled, it would be a useful tool to make available to the general public. ! I am also going to set up the page so that one of them can maintain the information, add new resources, etc. as time goes on.
I emailed Fetish Focus on the Family when James Dobson signed on to the letter criticizing Richard Cizik for his concern about global warming, simply to register my disappointment (and knowing full well that it wouldn't make much difference). I told them that it was sad to see Dobson living into his role as a shill for the right wing of the Republican party instead of primarily a follower of Christ.
