Green (carbon neutral) web hosting Print E-mail
Written by Laryn

Green HostingSome time ago, I wrote about switching our house over to wind power. This was a step in the right direction for all the electricity we use internally such as our lights, stereo, fans, and the computer that I type these entries and do my freelance graphic design on. But another question remained: what about the server that hosts the website, which is always on, 24/7 (along with all the other computers in the data center)? Well, earlier this year the host that we use announced they were going 100% carbon neutral, which was a pleasant surprise.

Brian Walsh interview (RE: Colossians Remixed and beyond) Print E-mail
Written by Laryn

bwalsh.jpg A quick follow-up to the last post about Revolution in Jesusland -- I wanted to pull out one of the posts from the site which deserved a special mention. Zach and Elizabeth have recently sat down with Brian Walsh (who co-authored Colossians Remixed with his wife, Sylvia Keesmaat). It's a good listen and there is always something you can get from a relaxed sit-down interview that is hard to replicate in print -- and I found a few parts actually more convincing in this interview than in the book itself (e.g. in the full interview there is a section on the passage in Colossians about slaves and it seems fuller than I remember it being in the book). Here's a few transcribed clips (go to the blog entry for the audio):

"Every week we come together and remember that Jesus died on an imperial cross in order to bring about a kingdom that will overthrow the empire."

Revolution in Jesusland Print E-mail
Written by Laryn

jesusland_th.jpgHat tip to Zach Exley (author of the Preaching Revolution article I posted some months ago) for pointing me to his new blog, "Revolution in Jesusland." It looks like it will be an interesting one to follow -- a self-described "guided tour for secular progressives to America's fourth Great Awakening."

This blog is a plea to the progressive movement, to take another look and get to know the diverse and complex world of evangelical Christianity in its own terms. Here you’ll find interviews, commentary, analysis and other dispatches from all over "Jesusland."

Alternative Gift Registry (wedding, baby, etc.) Print E-mail
Written by Laryn

070925_registry_th.jpg Just a bit too late for us to use, I found out about the Alternative Gift Registry. We had created our baby registry manually so that we could add non-commercial items (like meals after the baby is born, or pledges to babysit), to let people know we were fine with good quality used items, and to allow purchased items to come from any store that carried them. The only problem was people had to inform us that they bought something so we could remove it from the list, either by emailing us or by anonymously filling out the "Contact Us" form. Now I come to find out that this whole process has been automated, so if you are in need of a registry like this, check out alternativegiftregistry.org.

World Carfree Day - Sept. 22 Print E-mail
Written by Laryn

majestic_th.jpg Adbusters: Every September 22, people across the globe get together to swear off their cars -- if only for one day -- in a collective reminder that we don't have to accept car-dominated societies, cities, or personal lives. Since its earliest incarnations in the 1970s and '80s, WORLD CARFREE DAY has grown into a massive global celebration of human-centric communities and people-powered transportation.
