Four hundred forty pounds
of squid were snagged in the net,
dragged up from nearly a mile down
and pickled like a brain.

At the museum,
it will float in suspension
with the dogfish embryos,
beside the two-headed piglets and
the skeletons of humpbacked whales,
hanging in its own unique purgatory,
or hell,

endlessly replaying in its mind
the day that the sperm whale
chased it for an hour
on a single breath of air,
and silently enduring the tourists
as they talk excitedly about Captain Nemo
and fantasize about calamari rings
as big as car tires.
