070327_dobson.jpg I emailed Fetish Focus on the Family when James Dobson signed on to the letter criticizing Richard Cizik for his concern about global warming, simply to register my disappointment (and knowing full well that it wouldn't make much difference). I told them that it was sad to see Dobson living into his role as a shill for the right wing of the Republican party instead of primarily a follower of Christ. They sent me back two emails over the next three weeks, telling me that they had an abnormally large volume of email to respond to. I hope they got a deluge of similar mail. The second email contained the official response which puzzles me. Early on it talks about how there is still "considerable debate within the scientific community over both the scope and causation of this apparent trend."

I hate to burst his Republican talking point (not really) but the science is not really being debated anymore. It's actually "unequivocal" according to the scientists. But since when do scientists have any credibility?

The response continues: "More importantly, it’s Dr. Dobson’s view that critical moral issues such as the preservation of traditional marriage and the defense of the preborn must remain preeminent in terms of evangelical involvement in the public square." Obviously Jim Wallis and Sojourners haven't gotten through to him about the broadening discussion over what constitutes a moral issue. (If Dobson would ever answer straight, I wonder what he'd say about the moral dimensions of global warming, from its causes through to its effects, especially the fact that "the least of these" will likely bear most of the consequences).

Anyway, the kicker came towards the end, when I read this: "...Dr. Dobson, along with his fellow co-signers, felt it was their responsibility to sound the alarm and encourage the leadership of the NAE to leave the debate in the hands of scientists, rather than ministry leaders, and to refocus their energies on their original policies and commitments."

Suddenly they want to leave the debate in the hands of scientists? After basing their arguments on ignoring scientists? And by this logic, do they also want to leave the abortion debate to the doctors? The stem cell debate to the scientists? The evolution debate to the scientists?

What a joke.

For something worth reading, check out Restoring Eden's response to the letter.

(Hat tip to my brother Matt for showing me RE's response and to Meg for the term "Fetish on the Family").
