With all the recent presidential talk of promoting democracy in the world, and with Iraqi's going to the polls today, it seems appropriate to ask the question: Why doesn't the capital city of the USA have representation? It's a good question, and I've never heard a good answer defending it. (Here's a summary of the historical situation.) The problem is, most people just don't realize it: survey says almost 8 in 10 people in the US don't realize this fact, though 82% would support voting rights for the District. After all, DC residents pay taxes and are in the military. My question is, if something like this went to the vote, who could vote against it and survive in their position? With the cutthroat political advertising that goes on these days, who could get elected amidst ads screaming that they "voted against democracy for American citizens!" I have to admit that I do like the license plates, though, and it would be a TINY bit sad to see them go, with their blunt, all-caps "TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION" turning the heads of the tourists. (My first response upon seeing them was: "Wait a sec. Isn't that wrong?") Then again, I don't live in DC anymore. So what do I care? {moscomment} |
