Another week, another grainy cellphone photo from the Cathedral... Last night we went to the Bruce Cockburn solo show and that makes it two visits to the Cathedral within a week of each other. I was telling Janel how the last time I had a chance to go to a Cockburn concert I couldn't go because I was broke. It was at the Calvin Festival of Faith and Writing in 1998 -- I had borrowed money to buy my ticket to the festival and couldn't afford the $10 ticket for the concert. Fortunately I did get to go to the session he led and got to hear him talk about his writing and play a few short selections for us. I wanted to go to the Cathedral show in part because I missed that one, but also because it seemed like a rare opportunity -- considering the venue. I loved it. The sound had a definite resonance and it felt like an intimate little gathering (with people in the audience calling out now and then). What an amazing guitarist!
Explore the beauty and poignancy of the human condition at a special acoustic concert by renowned musician and outspoken activist Bruce Cockburn. Deemed the folk-rock muse of Canada, Cockburn has released over 25 internationally acclaimed albums since his first solo project in 1970. His collected work journeys around the world, expressing vivid imagery and unflinching observations about cruelty, courage, faith and survival.
A keen observer of his environment—both internal and external—Cockburn has been called by some a Christian mystic. And he has been candid about his Christian beliefs, his instinctive spirituality driving the social justice imperative of his work.
“That thing we call love is central to everything. God is love and God is also another name for the energy that informs everything in the cosmos, the binding agent,” says Cockburn. “Language fails when you talk about these things. I just know what I feel.”
Cockburn just played at Calvin again last week and was amazing. Unfortunately, students seem to be losing interest in his music; apparently he isn't young or "cool" enough anymore. They have no idea what they're missing ...
